GREAT Advice there. Useful items in the scenarios mentioned, but the prescription is an absolute must. Don't want to end up in the brink over something truly innocent.

It may sound silly but I keep a bottle of super glue in the kit. A bad gash can be glued shut to stop the bleeding . If I remember correctly it was invented and used in Viet Nam

I always have perscriptions for both. I was just listing some items I personally take along. I guess I should have re-phrased my response to say that you should include any perscription drugs (I.E. Epipen, painkiller etc) which you may need, and make sure to include proof of the persription.

Glue works for shutting a wound. The best course of action though if you can get to an ER quickly is to stop the bleeding with direct pressure, elevation and arterial pressure point then bandage tightly. Before and after bandaging check for PMS(pulse, motory , sensation). Wiggle fingers or toes, check pulse check skin for color and warmth. Dont cut off the circultion. If you did loosen the bandage but not the dressing.

Anyone mention 3M Electrical Tape yet?

To close a wound, you can also wrap in bandages or paper towels, and wrap with electrical tape (it's waterproof). That's my old fix is paper towel and electrical tape. Most of the time I can keep fishing till we're done and address it later

Since were talking about it, lets go a little further.
Dressing= gauze pads, clean rag,t-shirt, paper towels.
Bandage= roll of gauze,or tape to hold dressing in place.

In the case of a cut (laceration) to an extremity perform the following.

1. apply direct pressure with a clean dressing.
2. elevate the extremity
3. if bleeding does not stop and dressing is soaking thru add more dressing. NEVER EVER remove the dressing to check the wound.
4. if bleeding continues apply pressure to the arterial pressure point. For an arm put pressure between the bicep muscle and ticep muscle on the inside of arm. You should feel a pulse when you start. For a leg find the pulse in the crease where your leg starts and your hip ends on the front of the thigh.
5. When bleeding stops bandage the wound. Check the hand or foot for PMS(pulse, motor, sensory). Have them wiggle the diggets, feel for pulse ask which finger or toe your holding.
6. If no pulse or no color in extremity loosen bandage.
