I'm wondering what you use to make the scale design .Some sort of mesh? I've never attemped building one so I would have no clue on procedure's. Like where you even go to buy the piece of wood.

I gotwood
what about the whole for the belly hook? do you do it before the wood is spun or after.
If it is after I always have trouble drilling a straght hole in a round pice of wood. I have heard there are tools to help you line it up but I never was able to find one

ChukA...Not to familiar with CT so I don't know where you are located (no map handy). However, if you're not to far from Rhody, a friend of mine owns and opperates a saw mill...GHusee what he works with...CEDARS...probably the best plug wood for anything that sits near or on the surface. Poloquin Wood products 401-232-3630. I do some shipping for him and ONLY charge for the wood and what it costs me to ship it (UPS and GAS in my truck to get from home to mill to UPS store and home) I ONLY do this for guys that make plugs. I'm not at my home computer. I have the prices listed at home...I'll post later.

Wireing plugs...get anneled stainless wire (.062). Anneled wire bends way more easily. More to follow!

You can use nearly any wood - cedar is the wood of choice because of it's natural resistance to rot - but if properly sealed you can use pine, poplar, maple...nearly anything with a good tight closed grain -

Woods like oak, mahagony are fine but are wicked open grained and it's hard to get that nice smooth finish - you'd have to prime the snot out of it to fill the grain.

For scales - finding new patterns is just about a disease - you'll find me cutting up gym bags, old football jerseys, bridal veil material from wal-mart, shoe storage organizers - clementine (the fruit) box coverings, onion bags.....

Here's the wood info:
Atlantic White Cedar: $2.50 per bd. ft. or $10.00 for a 2? X 6? X48? board.

Second Growth Cypress: $3.00 per bd. Ft. or $12.00 for a 2? X 6? X 48? board

Alaskan Yellow Cedar: $ 2? X 2? $1.00 per linear ft. a 3 footer = $3.00 (this is sometimes in the form of ballusters and will be slightly less than 2" X 2")

Call 1-401-232-3630. Ask for WILL tell him (Dick, the guy that makes plugs) told you to call. Leave message he may be sawing wood (not sleeping)

The wood is cut from trees that are trucked in from all over the country. The wood is NOT kiln dried (except for the ballusters) however it has been cut into very large boards and stacked for quite some time. I cut the wood to size (2 X 2 X 5, 6,...8 inches...etc.. I then open stack it in my basement with a 5 lb lead ingot on top with dehumidifiers running 24/7. I will let it stand for a couple of weeks, and have had NO trouble with moisture in the wood. I have turned some and left them unsealed just to see if they would split...non yet!
