With a "tuna" fork! ...
If you're making a swimming plug it's a good idea to "float test" the turned plug BEFORE any holes are drilled...INCLUDING the through wire hole if it's going to be an off center drilling. Put enough water in a sink to float them. Give the plug a slight spin and when it stops mark the center of the plug on the top. Your weight and hook holes should be drilled on the OPPOSITE side from your mark. I'm not sure how important that is for other plugs that have little or no action, but for plugs that you are trying to control their swimming action this will help. A guy named Jig Man taught me that one!

Thanks for the info. I've made plenty of duck decoys and carvings but wanted to know how you guys did it with plugs.
One thing I always did before dunking the fresh carving was lay a piece of dry cleaning bag down on the water to keep the wood dry. Not sure if plugs would be too light in weight to push it down without it affecting their floating true.
