Now for the thru hole drilling - on the lathe, I replace the spur drive with a drill chuck and a 1/8" drill bit. I start on one end, using the tailstock as a slide to peck-drill (to keep the drill flutes clear and avoid walking off center) the hole to the depth of the bit, I flip the plug and do the same on the tail end, now using the nose thruhole to maintain the alignment.

I finish with a cordless drill and a long bit.

I install the belly and weight holes and I spot-face for the eyes next - i use a 1/4" fostner bit for the belly hook holes and the weight hole

Last of the shaping processes is the installation and blending the belly weight - I pre-pour 1/4" slugs, I fit the slug into the belly weight hole, and then trim thhe weight 1/16" above flush -

This is wher I get a little unorthodox - I use a small hammer and SLOWLY tap the lead weight, compressing and peening the weight into the hole, forming it with the body - I finish with a very light sanding

Next I seal the wood to protect from moisture absorption - I use a 50/50 cocktail of Val-Oil and odorless mineral spirits. I dip the plug in a PVC tube and soak the plug a minimum of 2 minutes. I towel off the plug and hang it to dry for the next 24-48 hours.

OK- Now the fun part.

First I lay on the base coat. In this case I want to make a special parrot fish pattern to take with me to Mexico in January.

I start with irridescent green all over and then blend irridescent blue over the head.

SCALES!!!!

Select your scale material - I found this at wal-mart - it used to be a shoe holder that hangs on the back of a door.

Wrap the material around the plug and hold in place with those metal binder clips - I apply 2 light coats of flourescent green and then SPARINGLY fog some irridescent aqua hover the head and eye area.

Allow to dry for 10 minute or hit it with a hair drier for a minute and then remove the mesh.

OK - now to give the paint some depth I give the plug a light fog of black down the back and around the eyes - After drying for 24 hours I epoxy in the eyes -
