Please remember; while this is a gret method for oncenter drilling.
Predrilling on center like this is no good for swimmers. The nose hole on a swimmer is located by the lip!

This will happen only or mostly when you over tighten the piece of wood on the lathe. Most people over tighten the stock that causes it to split. You've got 1/4" penetration on both ends I usually just give 2 spins and then worst thing that can happen is the piece of wood just spins a little and I tighten it a little more. I predrill 100 % of my lures and then spin them and I've done about 1500 so far on a lathe and of them I've had only 2 so far that have cracked. (ALWAYSE WEAR SAFETY GEAR).

Charleston I through drill my swimmers too. Then I just put them into the lathe a little off center on one end this gives a perfect angle for the body. It just vibrates a little at first .

OH by the way befor the question's start about only 1500 lures on the lathe. Befor that I turned all my lures on sanders. I still do some.
