Captains Log 21 June 2007 Circumnavigation of Marthas Vineyard Or How to send Ben off to Alaska – Seaker Style One of our best customers has two sons. Both great guys. Ben has taken a job this summer working for an outfitter in Alaska. He did this last year also. Can you imagine what a great adventures our children are experiencing? My son is in Australia working for a snow ski operation this summer and Robby son Ben is leaving for Alaska next week. Well Rob wanted to give him a proper send off. He said make something special happen..Lets get some big bass and have an adventure. I gathered as much Intel as I could and we formulated a plan with two back ups just in case. I asked Rob seeing that we were to leave so early in the morning to stay on Seaker with the boys night before. Game on and we met last night around 2100 and I headed off to bed after a quick hello and good to see you. Man some days, morning just comes too early and today was one of those. I was pumped to get on the water especially with this gang as they are very self sufficient. I thought we had a good handle on where the fish were and what they we on so we were ready and excuted. The boys slept all the way out. Can you imagine that? .Rob and I compared notes and it was full on. A great and gorgeous sunrise greeted us as we cleared Woods Hole Passage and steamed across Vineyard Sound. With the sun washing over us and smooth seas the boys slept as we passed West Chop Vineyard Haven, and East Chop, Oak Bluffs and up ahead Cape Poge and Cape Poge light. We turned to starboard and headed down Musketgett Channel heading due south to Tom’s Shoal where we would go lines in. Only a few boats were present and we set lines in quickly and without much discussion. As the guys locked the reels in gear I heard in unison “FISH ON” No finer words does a Captain hear. One fish, two fish it’s bluefish but we got tight instantly and it’s a start. We put the lines back out and again we are tight. We are using a new jig made by C&K Tackle a small lure maker. Gotta love the entrepreneurial spirit that is still alive out there. High quality and more importantly great fish catchers. We begin strong and then Nick yells, “I’m tight and it’s wicked big!” I look over from the helm to the deck and the wire rod setup is doubled over and the fish is making those slow head shakes that big ones do. Nick is into the fish of his young life and we clear the other line to give him every advantage when it happens; the fish came unbuttoned. Nick shook it off better than I did. His dad and brother both just said it happens and let’s get it back out. Folks this was one big fish. My estimate is the largest striper we have hooked on Seaker. We went on to seek more fish and catch we did. We dropped a lot of fish but catching was so strong no one really cared. When we lost the tide we began our searching mode and covered some hallowed water such as Wasque Shoals, The Hooter, NoMan’s Island, Devils Bridge and all the way back up Vineyard Sound back through Woods Hole Passage where we entered some 11 hours previous. Whew..Everyone was sleeping except the Cappy…no nappy for the Cappy. Buzzards Bay greeted us with 4-6 foot waves spaced about two seconds apart..I was so glad that we were in a large boat. None of the crew ever awoke until it was time for fenders at the marina. We caught a lot of fish. Some got released, some got dropped, some are going for dinner tomorrow and some will be going out with Scary Rob and me for our next adventure on the boat with no name. We began using the Brite Eyes made by Chris Toler Cnktackle@aol.com We ahve enjoyed excellent succes probably due to it being different from the umpteen chutes the fish see each tide. We find them affordable, durable, and catch well. When the tails get chewed off by bluefish we teach the customers how to change them out and it's very easy. I don't think ther are any retail outlets just contact Chris and he gets the goods out quickly Good Luck Captain Vin | ||
