Break from the salt

Went up to Hartland , ct to fish Lake McDonough just below the Barkhamstead Res. Some guys at work have been ranting about this place, so I figured what the heck let's spend a day there.

I started at the south end of the lake with the wind in my face. Found some rocky structure and threw a live shiner on a three way rig with a very small bell sinker keeping the bait suspended about 18" off bottom , leaving the bail open. Threw a medium sized Rooster Tail spinner with yellow feathers while waiting for a taker on the minnow, didn't take long for line to start peeling off , first fish Pikerel about 16". Continued throwing the spinner bait after rigging another shiner and coaxed two smallies into striking, the first about 2lb. , the next slightly smaller. Fished this area for about another hour with no luck. It was around 10am so I figured the morning bite was over and decided to find some eats for me and explore the area for a while.

Nice quaint little towns my wife would probably enjoy browsing some of the local stores while I fish. Well I got back around 2pm and headed to the north end of the lake as the guys at work said they had done well here. While I was driving around my remaining shiners expired so it was artificial the rest of the day. Threw a rainbow pattern Rapala for one LMB about 1lb and then bang a nice fat 19" Rainbow trout. Switched to a chartruese Rooster tail and got two Brown trout about 13". So it was a great day away from the shore with some beautiful scenery and a few nice fish. All fish were returned to their realm to make someone else's day.
