blue crab report

I've been out roughly 4 times this week, mainly at night and have had excellent luck catching these things. mainly in the old lyme and niantic areas. many smalls and egg bearing females to weed out but all in all I've had decent numbers of keepers on each trip. Most were caught simply walking the flats in 2 - 3 feet of water with a long net and a flashlight. I also had some good luck in th great island area from the boat using traps. either way if crabbing is your thing then now would be a good time to get out there at night and give it a try.

Here is a crab report to follow up 8/25 went out this morning North Cove Ols Saybrook 2 hours before high tide and caught 2 dozen before the tide crapped out. The bite stopped then, mostly keepers only a couple of females.Enough for a good mess of crabcakes, you yanks can keep your sauce. I mean does anyone out there even know what a "Hardfry" is? LOL

I was using good old Stop and Shop chicken thighs. Check with the meat manager, sometimes they will sell you outdated chicken for less money. I found that crabbing the edge of the channels worked best. North Cove has moorings and I find a vacant one and tie up to it and can move out a little as the bite slows. No one has made me move off one yet but I would without a fight out of respect.Good luck Crab cakes tonite.
