I dont think you can use the tongs in CT. It would be considered commercial fishing because you are not in the water. I dont know if this is correct, but that is what this guy was told over in Norwalk when we were out there last year clamming. Anyone on this????????

I don't know if the rules have changed in the last 20 years or so, but we used to use tongs all the time off the Norwalk Islands and never had a problem.

State statue allows the use of tongs for the recreational taking of shellfish from approved recreational areas. BUT- each town has the final decision on what method they will allow. So no easy answer, you've got to call the town you want to clam in and ask.

Here's the stats:
Implements to take shellfish, such as rakes or tongs, must have openings or spacing between the teeth or prongs of one (1") inch or greater.
