| Im no expert but I played around for 5 years. I found that 30 to 50 foot was the most productive for me atleast. I never went to crazy looking for rocky areas. I looked more for drop offs. good luck

| I am no expert but I worked on comm lobsterboats for 8 years and also ran around 100 of my own pots in that area. The commercial guys just blanket the area and are fishing for lobsters mainly when they are running (shedding and mating). They are fishing trawls and are not worried, for the most part, about structure. Fishing around rocks or structure is best for the everyday type of guy. here you will catch grounds keeper lobsters that make a more permanent home around the structure. I have caught lobsters around rocks in as little as 2 feet of water. If I were you I would try a couple shallow 15 or so feet and couple deeper down to maybe even 50 or 60 feet. Lobsters also seem to like the edges of structure so if you are going for a rock pile don't drop it on tope but try to hit the edges. One trick I used to find the exact edge of rocks was to drop the pot let it come tor est on the bottom and drag it until I felt it hit the edge of teh rock pile. Of course this is just my opinion and I will issue no guarantees with it. |

| Thanks fishon I was watching the Deadliest Catch this past week on discovery where they were showing the guy catching king crabs so I began to wonder do they move in the same way. They suggested that crabs move in packs and bunches and the key is to get ahead of them in the direction they are moving and drop your pots their. As for as mating and shreddign goes what time of year does this occur??? |

| Don't do the deep thing..... I assume you are dropping singles? I assume this is a hobby? I am sure that the comms in your area would pick you up in one of their trawls, and just either cut it away, or splice into one of their own strings at a later date. The best alternative is they will haul your gear, relieve you of any legal bugs that may be in there, and drop you back down in same spot(usually they re bait it, so you are none the wiser)....better than dropping you in much deeper water Don't mean to sound cruel or rain on your parade, but I have watched many, many recreational lobsterman try(to absolutely no avail) and catch a few bugs in the deeper water, even with mini 3-5 pot trawls, and inevitably they lose em.... Stay in shallow areas, especially around docks in harbors, etc.....Singles must stay as far away from other gear as possible as well.....you should do well in 3-20 feet mor so. The bugs crawl pretty good most years late June-late July(around the 4th is always really good for me) and again from Thanksgiving or so to Christmas and beyond(here in RI anyway)

| When I was on a commercial boat out of brandofrd we would see the "run" start about one week after the full moon in July. Nothing scientific but it is my believe that they shed a day or two after the full moon. That is when we use to start pulling up pots loaded with softies. During this time they do seem to move away from structure for a week or two. With July being the best month there was ussually a small sprng run from Mid April to Mid May and then as was mentioned above anotehr small run around Thanksgiving. You can PM me and i might be able to set you up on some of my favorite rockpiles that I use to fish off of Guilford Ed |
