That's a good reason to set trawls, even short 3 pot, with a bouy on each end of the string. If one gets cut you can still get your pots.
There is a place on rte1 in Westbrook "Dick's Marine" that has some lobstering stuff....bouys, warp, traps, heads, etc etc

Try doing 3 pot strings, good advice by Bob and Mag. The singles can have too many things happen to them, besides getting cut off......

If you fish deep water, the first clown who thinks its his personal anchor will drag it so far down its gonna take a grapple to find it, and a single on the bottom is like a needle in a haystack, just one nice scenario.....

You can space the pots out far enough that with no hauler you can combat the heavy load of trying to hand lift a trawl.....in other words leave enough room where only 1 pot will be off the bottom at a time. a trwal will be alot easier to catch should both buoys be compromised at once.

Buy your own white buoys, and paint them with liquid vinyl paint in any color pattern you want.

Excellent advise! Unless you have a hauler follow the above by CaptDom.

I used the guy in fairfield. I think its called the lobster locker. He worked out of the back of posters hardware .I think I paid $40 a pot about 6 years ago. He made some good stuff. He makes 1 hell of an eel pot also. The bouys i got from a place in derby. i think it burned down a few years ago. Im not sure if they moved or rebuilt. I bought a couple of cases of the deformed bouys for like $50. 90% of them were useable.
I liked fishing single pots for a couple of reasons. they are heaveier than you think coming up.And I liked to drop them in differant areas. Most of the time I only fish 4-5 at a time. I never put out all 10.

for bait I found fresh bunker of bluefish worked the best.
In branford area i tried all over the place. Everyone said roundrock was great and loaded with lobster. Well it sucked. Townsends ledge or the beacon wasnt to great. I did ok but not worth burning the fuel on the east side of browns in about 40 feet.( there is a guy who fishes that area that will pull your gear.
The new haven walls are good but its not worth the fights with the comm guy that fishes them. He gets alittle crazy at times.
My honey hole was in milford off of the woodmont area. I did very well there from april until the end of august. but I did get alot of softees. Its kind of a run from branford (i think thats where you said you were out of)
nobody every bothered my gear there. If you are interested in the milford area let me know. I will send you my numbers.

I wouldnt use a float. I would blind fish the pots. This way there is no worry of someone cutting or pulling your pots. My Portuguese friends do nothing but blind fish. Mark the GPS start of drop to end of drop. Then when you haul them, you use a grapple hook and drag the opposite way as to the way they were dropped. If you fish them norht to south then you drag east to west.

I've got my pots last year from a guy in stratford I paid $20 a pot he also sold me these red buoys but I think I am going to get some white ones and paint them with my unique color combination. Yeah Real Crazy I live in Hamden but pull my boat to either branford or guilford. I know where the Milford public launch area is..not too pleasant do I like the town marina better but it might be a pain to get daily permits.

You can also buy time release clips for the buoy lines. They come in 1 to5 day increments and are accurate to within a couple of hours. So if you drop your pots on day 1 with a 3 day release and come back 3 1/2 days later you should find your pots.
