Montauk Sportfishing Report 5/7/07

5/7/07
I woke up Sunday morning and there was a little breeze but I didn’t think much of it. Then I took a ride down to the Point and saw that it was more than just a little breeze. It was crappy out, so much that no boats were out for the fluke. I have to get my weather sense back in tune.
Fluke fishing has been pretty good, but it would be a lot better under the old regs. A nineteen and a half inch fish weighs around three pounds. That’s a pretty nice fish - more than a couple servings. The boats have been catching keepers, and some guys have been coming back with their limits, but a lot of shorts are going back.
Stripers are being caught in the surf fairly regularly, but so far nothing for the boats. The HOOKER gave it a half day this past week without any success. I always figure the first bass will get caught between the fifteenth and twentieth of the month, so we probably have another week or so to wait.
The past couple of weeks have given us the best codfishing that we have had in years, but it seems to be slowing down just a little now.
There are squid in Fort Pond Bay, and the Viking has been sailing nights for them. Some locals have been sneaking onto the dock at Rough Riders as well, but that will be stopped if it gets out of hand.
I won’t have a report for you next week because I’m leaving for Panama for a couple of days fishing. I’ll let you know how I made out when I get back.
