9/4/07 Remember in the Spring all the talk about what the fluke regs should be? We had a number of choices and wound up going for the nineteen and a half inch minimum with no closed season. Well, this week the DEC issued a "Gotcha" notice. The season is now going to close on September 17, after changing their minds and not making it a September 4 closure. What do you think is going to happen next year, when we all know the regs are going to be more stringent than they were this year? And, how many anglers are going to simply ignore the regs? The shortened season doesn’t affect us here in Montauk as much as it does the guys back west. We’re on the down side of the season anyway. There are still some decent fish around, but it is getting harder to get them. The striped bass fishing seems to be on the down side as well. It should be improving, but you hear too many guys on the radio talking about catching bluefish. That’s a bad sign as they’re usually trying to avoid them. It doesn’t seem like there are that many fish around right now. I heard about a boat this past week that got ticketed for having forty short scup. Everybody on the boat got a ticket, but the end result will probably be one fine for each fish. The fine is usually fifty dollars, so that’s still a hefty piece of change. I think the charter boats might start thinking about having the customers sign a release absolving them from any fines should they want to fish with live bait. Offshore the shark fishing is holding up pretty well with a mixture of blue sharks and small makos. At least that’s what I’ve been hearing. I was out Sunday and only got one bluedog, but that’s probably just me. We should start to see the giant fall bluesharks pretty soon now with theses cooler waters. The tuna fishing out near the edge was excellent up until about mid week when it dropped off considerably. In addition to the usual yellowfins and longfins there were a surprising amount of bigeyes being taken as well, and not just at dawn and dusk, but even at midday inside the drop-off on the flats. That’s probably the result of cooler waters as well. The last couple of years you’d see the temps in the upper seventies, but now they’re down around 72-73 degrees. The fish seemed to be retreating offshore a little as well. Earlier in the season the magic east west line was 425, then it dropped down to 400 and now it is closer to 360 or so.
