2007 is now over for me! My boat will be pulled likely this week. Recently, thanks to Google Earth, I was able to take a trip down memory lane and see all of my favorite spots in Jamaica Bay that I use to fish. Today, I live in Stonington CT. Fifty years ago, I was a Brooklyn boy that loved to catch Striped Bass chumming with grass shrimp. I was fortunate enough back then to have a mentor named Allan, that showed me the ropes. In my entire life, the most enjoyable fishing experiences for me were to catch bass while chumming with grass shrimp. It will be unlikely you will ever catch a record breaker using this technique but it was the only method I knew which would enable me to consistently catch large amounts of bass during midday without much needed in the way of expensive tackle or a substantial sized boat. Back in the fifties the only limit was a size limit of 16 inches. I paid for my college education by selling bass in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. I was thinking of of presenting several articles on this subject, for this form, to keep me busy during the long boring winter months. However, I am not really sure that anyone still chums with grass shrimp, or if they even care. I have never seen anyone chumming with grass shrimp in Connecticut even though these shrimp abound in our coves. For some unknown reason, it seems that this technique has its roots in Jamaica Bay and as I have not fished there in decades, I am not even sure that current Jamaica Bay anglers even give a hoot about this technique. Therefore, this thread starter, is really nothing more than a poll for me. If there is enough interest for those who have never experienced catching Striped Bass on grass shrimp, I will keep myself busy this winter being a mentor for you. This is one technique that would be almost impossible to succeed at if you did not have someone to show you the ropes. | ||

You guys win! I will post away but you will have to wait a few weeks for two reasons. First one is I am getting ready to do battle with town hall. In Stonington CT, they just reevaluated all properties for tax purposes. This time they went way overboard and have gotten most of the town in an uproar. I will appeal my case, but if proper adjustments are not made, I could end up in court appealing my evaluation. This really scares me as there is no way that I could afford an attorney; but what the hell, I can speak my piece more honestly than most attorneys could anyway. The second reason is since there will have to be several sketches on, how to make a grass shrimp seine, how to properly bait a hook, how to attach your leader to a hook that had it's eye cut off, how to make a deep release chum pot, and the terminal rig itself, I will have to figure out how to operate some new DRAW software I loaded into my computer. If you wish to post any of my previous returns, be my guest. Actually, I enjoyed reading Captain Dom's posts quite a bit, and especially his encouragement when things were not going that well for me. This man knows his business. I am surprised that you would not have asked him for his permission as well. Just from reading his posts it seems that we are miles apart. He is a Professional Charter Boat Captain, years of experience, fishing our coast successfully for whatever is out there to be caught, while I am nothing more than a marsh rat and love being one. It seems like we come from two different worlds only held together by our love of fishing. | ||

| Scup, We just went through re-evaluation in Clinton. Most properties doubled and shoreline property went up 4 times. BUT the mill rate was reduced by just a little less than half so it didn't hit that taxpayers as much as we thought it would. They did get a little more but not much. Be careful on the appeal process. We know of a few here in town that did it. Two made out, and not by much, but the third had another re-re-evaluation and they said "you're right we did make a mistake....we were too low" and their tax went up even more. Just a heads up, while you could make out, you may be even worse off.

| I am shore front (marsh) property. My problem is that a similar shore front house four properties from me, has been evaluated at 1.2 million. There is a "for sale" sign on the front lawn and the asking price is less than 0.8 million. When I spoke to the town assessor about something being really wrong with the model they are using and pointed out the above as an example, the reply was "we do not go by the asking price but the selling price". At this point things became a little terse as I replied "when did it ever happen that a perspective buyer, after being showed a home, would say "this home is so wonderful that I will pay more than the asking price". Things went downhill from there! Posting fishing items interest me far more than messing around with town hall. However, this business still has to be done. If my property is worth as much as they claim, then I should accept their value. I am not trying to put anything over on somebody, I just want a fair evaluation which to me means fair market value. They will be given a chance to do it again, and I have no idea how it will work out. | ||

| Scup, I wish you the best in your fight against town hall. i faught my re-assement and won last year, although i didn't have to go to court. unfortunately, values have dropped here over the last year, and my house is worth easily 100k less then last year....  anyway, if you want to just draw your pictures on paper, i would be happy to scan & post them for you. I could pick them up, as I am down that way all the time because my wife's family live in Pawcatuck and No.Sto.
