Ok I fish with a friend usually, now lets say we target fish A, and you are allowed 10 of fish A for the day per person. Now lets say your fishing buddy leaves you with the final catch of the day, which would be 20 fish. Can you get ticketed for an over limit if your buddy is gone? Im not to worried about being stopped where I fish, but I would like to know. Thanks.

For fun I'll ask the CTDEP next week about this issue, if your at the dock or at a fillet table and the crew leaves you have some risk. The whole issue revolves around the possession limit (when it starts and stops). I have chatted with the CTDEP about fish in boats on trailers (not on the water) (lets say you dragged your rig to NJ for fluke fishing (smaller size and larger possession limit)- its not enforceable. The same boat on the water would need to be in compliance with any states regulations while in the water of that particular state. If you want to get more specific with your question please do (for some reason I think your question revolves around scup with the 10 fish limit). Jack

I need to know more details - but straight from the CTDEP No person, ...(other than under a commercial license).., while on the waters of this state or on any parcel of land, structure, or portion of a roadway abutting tidal waters of this state shall possess or land any of the following species, regardless of where taken, in excess of the identified number. I had a deeper chat than the short answer above, basically, if your at a Marina, and your friend is gone and the DEP shows up you will most likely get pinched. If your at a ramp, and your friend leaves in his vehicle and your on the road you will be fine. (adjacent in this case means a marina or boat ramp or the "beach or bank"). I had a deeper chat about fillets but I think you were only talking whole fish and my guess is at the ramp or slip. But fillets get tricky if you sleep at a Marina and have multiple limits in a cooler - legal when caught but over the possesion limit. Jack

| Ok heres more, lets say you use fish A which could be what ever, but you use fish A for bait. Now you freeze fish A to stock up for a long trip. Now you have more than your limit of fish A, what is the situation here? Just some things I have been thinking about lately. Jeff | ||

When we get into the bait arena it ends up being an ethical discussion. In short, you can't legally go over the possession limit, in the case of bait if you had 10 frozen scup in the boat before you left the dock you would be "limited out" - you could not retain any more. If you went scup fishing and live lined them, the fish you live lined should could against your limit (even thought they are no longer in your possession - they were landed and should count against the bag limit.) Of course once the scup is eaten, its gone and not enforceable (thus an ethical issue). When scup season closes you can't have any scup in the boat at all (even frozen ones for bait). Jack

| Hey Jack thanks, just some things I think about. Im out a lot and follow the rules, dont need a ticket for fishing. This is how we humans learn, we ask questions...no dumb questions only dumb answers? Ethics most have none. | ||

NBS Supporter | My guess in any surrounding state would be yes as well...they would slam you. Even if you were legit....remember their jobs and departments are justified by imposing fines and generating revenue Now...if you know a second language and can fluently speak it......that may be another story ![]() My favorite scenario I see often at the ramp is a boat full of scup/sea bass fishermen (we won't go into ethnicity) and they drop one guy off at the dock while the other 10 stay on the boat. The guy backs the trailer down, they drive the boat on, latch it and zoom off they go...with 10 guys sitting in the boat.......gotta love it!! Nothing illegal there
