My neighbor shot a moose in his yard in West Hartland, CT last year and I heard he was only fined $200 because there are no laws on the books against killing a moose in CT. So that just tells every slob hunter in the region to come to CT, kill a moose and suffer a mere $200 fine if you don't get away with it. The state has got to start getting downright nasty when dealing with this element that plagues our woods and waters.

Scup, I(and crew) have caught as many as 54 in one day(releasing all but 3) fishing in the Atlantic and have done almost that well when I was up on the Chesapeke but that is still alot if from one outing. I carry a commercial hook and line lisc here in Md. but each lisc holder is allowed X amount of striper lbs. per lisc.I personally don't catch, kill or sell stripers and only take them for charter cutomers if they want them but encouage release. I've talked for years about what I call "The greed factor" amongest charter, commercial and recreational user groups. It's guys like this that screw up the catch data for management and limit the season and access for us all.

I would still be interested in hearing what the final penlty is. You hear of these unlawful sales and the fines incurred but never hear the "assumed" meanial) outcomes.

I asked my daughter (one of Stonington's finest) about how we could find out what will happen to this guy. Since he has only been charged, there will be likely be a court appearance in about 3 or 4 weeks, assuming some lawyer does not screw the timing up. Because this appears to be an open and shut case, very likely we should be able to ask the DEP, in about a month's time from now, how it was resolved. Not sure if we would really want to know what happens!

One of the problems is if you figure where there is one there are many(poachers).
Now say they net $3k per trip like this. How many are caught vs. how many get away with this illegal transaction? Let's, for argument's sake, say it's 1 in 10 get caught, though I doubt it. That would mean you make 10 trips or $30k and get caught 1 time, so take out $3k. Net is $27k.
My point is this: If the penalty does not exceed the $27k, then it's a waste of time because it would still pay to be a poacher with a fine of anything less.

Bob,

While your reasoning is correct and does make sense, in general we have been beaten over the head for so long with the way drug dealers go about doing their business this infraction seems to be peanuts. I read somewhere that if a drug dealer can operate for just five years without being caught, his profits are so high he is set for life. Poaching has got to be on the increase and like it or not it is a very profitable business. The last porgies I sold earlier this month during open season went for $2.85 per pound; probably now that the season is closed down, the black market price is even higher. What our regulators have done is something very similar to prohibition. They shut off new entries into the commerical fishing sector, limited the catch by having short open seasons, allowed less total catch, and regulates what gear can be used for what. While the supply of fish has now dwindled, the demand is higher than it ever was which jacked the price of fish out of sight, and even worse, there is zero record keeping for the black market. The estimate for what the illegal market price for that catch is probably way off. Go the following website: Commercial Quota For Striped Bass Mass - Ultimate Kayak Fishing
and note that the legal wholesale price of Striped Bass in Boston is currently $4 per pound, thus the black market price is probably much higher. Do not forget about the 87 pounds of porgies added to the mix which will probably bring the total worth to well over five grand. One thing America has always been good at is "supplying the public with what they want". It does not matter if it is prostitutes, alcohol, drugs, guns, or fish; if the public is willing to pay through the nose for it, there will be suppliers. When caught in illegal trade, the fines just become another minor cost of doing business. Now that bootlegging fish has become so profitable, it just becomes another arena for criminals to operate in. We should be use to it by now! I have no idea on how to fix this problem any more than how one would go about fixing the drug problem.
