What have you got to say about the topic of: "** NBS MEMBER Rescues Couple after BOAT EXPLOSION - (new article!) **". Here's how is started: "There is obviously much more to this story than in the article and than I "

There is obviously much more to this story than in the article and than I know and will tell, but on Sunday, my brother Dave ("ifish" on here) was fluking the south shore when ~300 yards away he heard a deep "THUD"......turned around only to see what looked like a small skiff nearby. He raced over to find the console had blown right off the deck of the boat (an ~18' Sea Hunt CC with an outboard). There was a couple aboard, and both were injured, and a small fire was still going on the boat. Long story short, they were transferred to his Formula and he moved away a safe distance in case of another explosion, there still being fuel on board! Coast Guard was called, and a private Paramedic that was out fishing also showed up, etc etc.......turned into quite the rescue operation in no time, ending with him having 10 people and all sorts of medical equipment on board, and transporting them back in to Pt. Judith Station under CG escort. (Airlift was going to take too long and they didn't have a backboard to move the wife to another boat.) When the below article was printed, the wife was apparently still in the hospital but in fair condition, hopefully both will be fine! KUDOS TO DAVE AND HIS "CREW" IN THE PROMPT RESPONSE AND SAFE EVACUATION OF THE COUPLE FROM THEIR BURNING BOAT, AND TO ALL WHO ASSISTED FROM THAT POINT ON ![]() ![]() ![]() **** BTW, to any who think bilge explosions are not a concern on an outboard boat, think again where your fuel tank is and where all your wiring is run, etc. Engines are not the only "ignition source"! This was not an old boat! Samaritans rescue couple after an explosion on boat | Rhode Island news | projo.com | The Providence Journal Samaritans rescue couple after an explosion on boat 01:00 AM EDT on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 A husband and wife were rescued from a boat about a mile off Point Judith on Sunday by Good Samaritans who saw an explosion and came over to help, the Coast Guard said. The explosion occurred shortly after noon in the boat’s console area, injuring Richard and Alicia Derise, of Narragansett, said Chief Wendy MacLean, of the Coast Guard station in Woods Hole, Mass. The couple were transported to shore with a Coast Guard escort and were taken to South County Hospital, MacLean said. Richard Derise, 59 was not admitted. But Alicia Derise, 61, was transferred to Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, where she was reported in fair condition yesterday afternoon. The state Department of Environmental Management towed the damaged boat to a warehouse at Quonset Point, in North Kingstown, andwas investigating the cause of the explosion, said Gail Mastrati, a DEM spokeswoman.

| Way to go there ifish (Dave). That's some scary stuff, and running up to a boat with a fire on it alone can be daunting. I give you lots of credit for doing the right thing and assisting. Makes me REAL glad I've just about rewired everything on my boat now. | ||

| Great job on the rescue! Will be interested in the cause of the explosion. Is the fuel tank in the cc or bilge on that boat?

| way to go Dave!! Just as your brother was telling me a story about how he had to save someone East of Chatham once you called and said you were in the middle of a rescue. That couple was very lucky an experienced boater was in the area and willing to help them. As I said to Eric, it sucks that your day got cut short....but it can only be good for Karma moving forward ![]() -Brian | ||

Here's a new article from the South County Independent with Dave's story, much better than the Projo article. South County Independent Boater helps rescue couple injured in vessel explosion By Mark N. Schieldrop/Independent Staff Writer NARRAGANSETT — David Seabury was fishing about a mile off Point Judith Sunday afternoon when he heard a loud thud from a boat about 600 yards away. “I looked off the bow and saw what looked like a skiff looking funny along the water line,” Seabury said. “I told my guys to pull their lines and we booked it over there.” Seabury, a North Kingstown resident and avid recreational fisherman, pulled alongside the boat and saw the center console had been blown off of its footing. “The console had rolled over onto the port side and the man was hunched over, holding his head, and his hair was burnt,” he recalled. “The woman was in pain and complaining about her shoulder and back. They were afraid, because the boat might explode again or sink. They just wanted to get the heck off that boat.” The bilge pump was on fire and smoke was drifting out of the cabin. Seabury called the U.S. Coast Guard and the two victims of the explosion, identified by the Coast Guard as Richard and Alicia Derise of Narragansett, boarded Seabury’s boat. The Coast Guard arrived within minutes. A Coast Guard EMT boarded Seabury’s boat and provided emergency treatment while another Coast Guard vessel began towing the Derise’s vessel, an 18-foot Sea Hunt. “The paramedics were on my boat, juggling oxygen, trying to assess them,” Seabury said. “The paramedics said not to move them because the Coast Guard didn’t have flatboards with them so I ended up bringing them back into the Coast Guard station. I ended up with a bunch of Coasties on my boat along with the two victims. It was a busy scene, a busy afternoon. I’m just glad I was in the area and able to help.” The Coast Guard said that the explosion occurred shortly after noon and the incident is under investigation. Richard Derise, 59, was treated at South County Hospital in Wakefield and released. Alicia Derise, 61, was transferred to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and later released. The state Department of Environmental Management towed the boat to a warehouse in Quonset, where it is being examined. Seabury said he’s glad he was in the area. “I can only imagine the scenario if the waters were rough and nobody heard the explosion,” Seabury said. “I’m just glad I was able to help – it’s what I’d want someone to do for me.” The incident followed a pair of back-to-back rescues Thursday, the Coast Guard said. At about 10 a.m., Coast Guard officials and Narragansett Police and Fire personnel responded to the Point Judith Breachway jetty for a report of someone who had fallen overboard. The Coast Guard dispatched a 27-foot boat crew while a petty officer drove to Salty Brine State Beach to assist police and fire officials already on the scene. A Warwick man who had slipped on the rocks was carried away on a flatboard. The Coast Guard did not identify the man, who was transported to a “local hospital,” the Coast Guard said. Later that day, the Coast Guard received a call that a woman had fallen on a sailboat about 3 miles off Black Point and suffered a head injury. A 47-foot crew boat and a 27-foot boat were dispatched from Coast Guard Station Point Judith and met up with the 42-foot sailboat Jacob’s Ladder. The woman was transported to the station, where they were met by Narragansett Emergency Service officials. The Coast Guard did not identify the woman and said she was transported to a local hospital. Her condition is unknown.
