Reply re: Proposed Menhaden Bill

Received this reply from Joe Courtney, thought I'd pass it on...

Dear Mr. Torcello,

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Atlantic Menhaden Act (H.R. 3840). I appreciate your comments and having the benefit of your views.

This bill was introduced by Representative Jim Saxton (R-NJ) on October 16, 2007, and would prohibit commercial Atlantic Menhaden fishing for reduction purposes in a zone that extends 200 miles into the Atlantic Ocean, from the coast. This moratorium would continue until a scientifically-determined catch level can be established that also considers the role of Menhaden in the ecosystem. This bill has been referred to the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, and Oceans. While I do not serve on this committee, please be assured that I will keep your views in mind should this legislation come before me for a vote.

You may be interested to learn that the first bill I introduced in the House of Representatives was the Eightmile Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (H.R. 986), a bill to designate the River as part of the Wild and Scenic Rivers System. On July 31, 2007, the House passed H.R. 986 by a vote of 253 - 172. It must next be considered by the Senate.

Should you have any additional comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me in the future. For more information on my views on other issues or to see what I have been working on in Congress, please feel free to visit my official website at Representative Joe Courtney and sign up for my e-newsletter.

Sincerely,

JOSEPH COURTNEY
Member of Congress
