I must have an iron lined stomach, because other than the pre game "wind", my experience was no problem whatsoever after eating 12 in one day

My Blunder is actually a commercial fishing story. Back in the day in the early 80's I was running my brother in laws boat off of the Dump. IT was a 31' JC with a 3208T Cat set up with a tower and pulpit. We were out there tuna fishing and did not have much luck sitting on the anchor chunking. On the way home I see this big shark and not sure what the species was I told my friend I think it was a Mako. He came down from the tower and walked out on the stand and looked back at me and said, it is a MAKO. I was now excited and asked Phil, how he knew this. Phil's response was, I saw a picture of one. Oh great, well I trusted Phil, walked out on the stand and he brought me in on the beast. I stuck the fish right behind the dorsal fin and he took out the 600' of pot warp as fast as any tuna I have stuck. After towing the ball aroudn for a while this dumb fish decides to come to the surface again while towing the ball. I decided to put a second harpoon in him as it was big and did not want to loose him. Just like before Phil, slides me on top of the fish as it is only two feet out in front of me as I drive the iron home. This was a mistake because attitude came into play as the 10-12' shark decided to come airborn only a foot off the pulpit over my head. It was an awesome scene that I will never forget adn turned to Phil and stated "Yup, it is a MAKO". We followed the fish for about another 45 minutes and the ball was not moving anymore. We hauled both lines back and found that the two lines were chaffed and the fish was gone. I could not believe loosing this fish after having two darts in him. About a week later, I was on the same stand and asked Phil to hand me something as the boat was in gear at clutch speed. The pulpit snapped at a bad weld and we both ended ulp in the water off of the bow. Luckily the operator at the time was prudent and went into reverse. We had to cut the pulpit off and put it in the cockpit. It was a blessing in disguise as just a few days earlier while chasing tuna I and another guy on a different day were out there at 14 knots. If it ever broke then, I never would have been able to join the NBS board. Dave | ||
