Blackfish Blunder

Last fall three of us were fishing the west breakwater outside New Haven Harbor. We had a stick up in the rocks with the anchorline holding us off the wall thus holding us steady over a tumbledown rockpile from the wall in 24' of water.
We had been fishing over an hour and had 11 fish in the bag up to 9 lbs. and were culling. The bag was tied at my feet and it was my job to tend to the bag as fish were added. The bag was awkward as it was mesh and had to come half aboard and loosened to add fish. After #11 went in I threw the bag back over and continued to fish.
As we fished my buddy at the stern looked over and asked if I put the bag back over. I said of course and looked down and saw why he asked. No bag attached to the boat. SOB. SOB.SOB. Drop my line. SOB. SOB.
OK It's done. Sorry guys. Keep fishing. Shoot a beer. Sorry guys. SOB.
Get a bunkersnagger. What the hell, it's a big bag. I have visions of all the fish swimming out of the bag like eels through a net. Dunk and jig, dunk and jig, I think I feel, yes I do, look at this, I got it.
The bag comes to the surface, of course the entrance wide open, but still had three smaller blackfish in it. Never did get our limit that day.

Fishin' off Clinton at inner Sou'west killin' scup on the slow tide. We had one bag full CLEATED off hanging in the water. 50 keeper scup [10 1/2 "] and workin on the cooler batch. Time to go to 6 Mile reef for our 2 42" bass each on board. I'm the anchorman so I go forward, haul back and come inboard again. Gary hits the throttle as he is one of those 2 speed drivers. I turn around in time to see the bag skipping on the surface as we come to plane. Thwapppp goes the line as the bag disappears in our wash.

God I hate fish bags

MY BLUNDER WAS: I WAS FISHING DOWN THE CANAL USING CHUNK BAIT THE TIME. FISHED FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS OF NOTHING!!! PUT A NEW PIECE OF BAIT ON, AND WHAMOOOOO A HIT. THIS FISH HAD SOME MEAN SET OF SHOULDERS ON HER. I FIGHT THE FISH FOR ABOUT 40 MINUTES BECAUSE I WAS USING LIGHT TACKLE. GET THE FISH TO THE ROCKS IN THE CANAL, YOU KNOW THE ONES WITH ALL OF THAT GREEN ALAGE ON IT!! THIS FISH WAS AT LEAST 40 TO 45 LBS MAYBE MORE. SO I BEND DOWN TO GILL THE FISH, AND SLIPPED ON THE GRASS, AND WENT ASS OVER TEAKETTLES.I WAS UP TO MY WAIST IN COLD WATER, WITH THE FISH BETWEEN ME AND THE BANK.I HAD CUT MY HEAD BADLY ENOUGH TO GET 32 STAPLES IN MY HEAD. THRU THE BLEEDING FROM MY HEAD, MADE IT REALLY DIFFICULT TO SEE THE FISH TO GRAB HIM AS THE LINE BROKE WHEN I SLIPPED AND FELL. I TRIED TO GRAB HIM BY THE TAIL, BUT WE ALL KNOW THIS IS THE MOST STUPID THING YOU CAN DO!! THE FISH FELT ME GRAB HIS TAIL, AND IT WAS OFF TO THE RACES. SO I LOST THE FISH (40-45LBS), 32 STAPLES IN MY HEAD AND A BROKEN RON ARRA GRAPHITE POLE, THAT WAS JUST BOUGHT. THE HOLE DAY WAS A COMPLETE CLUSTER BUCK.
THATS 1 OF MY ERRORS IN JUDGMENT HOPE IT WASNT TO STUPID!!! AND SOMEBODY ENJOYED IT!
PEACE
HENRY

It was a chilly October morning and we were standing up at the bow with mate Rob(Now Capt. of the Captree Princess).

My brother, who drove this particular morning was standing against the rail BSing with Rob and Marty twirling his keychain around on his fingers.

I told him several times to be careful the keys don't go flying into the water.

Of course he chose to ignore me, I'm the older brother, WTF do I know.

KERPLUNK, keys in the water.

Sonofa B****, I told ya so.

The water was not deep, maybe 4-5 feet, but black muddy and dirty.

Impossible to see a set of keys, not only that, they probably sunk into the mud when they hit bottom.

Rob grabbed a net and tried for quite some time to no avail to retrieve the keys.

Went out 1/2 Toggin, came back and tried again.

NOPE no good.

Stayed on for the second 1/2 went out, came back tried again.

Now it's getting late, I go to make a phone call to get a ride home.

As I'm standing at the pay phone I hear a load roar of a half dozen or so people.

Yes indeed, Rob caught the elusive keycahin with the net.

And home we went.

You had to be there.
