| If you are in or around the Stonington CT area, Gambardella Wholesalers 860-535-0743, carries frozen clams. The clam snot comes in four gallon pails, selling for the last couple of years for $10.00 per pail. He also carries whole clam tongues (labeled whole clam bellies) for $18.00 per one gallon container. That was last years price and this is pretty good stuff with no waste to speak of. It is what all the commercial pin fishermen use. To me, it appears pretty dam fresh, and almost always it is not exactly frozen assuming you pick it up just as soon as it gets off the truck. Of course, once it goes into his cold freezer room, it will get frozen pretty quickly. He also can get a 60 pound sack (approximate) of live quahogs. Last year he was selling them for $22 per sack. Note, these are the very large hard shell clams and while they are meant for human consumption, if any of your customers want the best clam bait possible these are it. I can keep them alive in a frig in a plastic flower pot (so they do not sit in their own water) for at least a week or two; although I would not want to try eating them if stored for so long. Lastly, he carries fresh squid for human consumption usually right off the boats. These will command whatever market price they are going for. The price will usually vary somewhere between $1.50 to $2.00 per pound. I just buy a pail of them, put them up in zip lock bags, and toss them in my freezer. They keep very well for both bait and human consumption (you really do not ever want to clean squid before freezing even if it for human consumption since their thin skin protects them.) Whatever bait I do not use up, I usually end up eating it (not the clams.) Gambardella also has trucks to deliver his seafood products. Not sure if he is in the shipping business for small orders, however, if you are on his route, and wish to purchase a large amounts, give him a call. Maybe you can work out something for a price and delivery? I would expect that this year, because of the increase in fuel, just about everything is going to increase quite a bit in price. For us commercial people, the only saving grace is that usually the market price of fish keeps pace as well. | ||
