    Montauk Sportfishing Report 5/1/17

OK boys and girls, get your heads out of your cellphones andlook up. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and it ain’t a train. It’sthe beginning of the fishing season. So get out your Cabela’s catalog and orderthe last little bit of crap that you just have to have.
Porgie season opens today but you will have to head over toPeconic Bay to get any of those. Striped bass season is already open and boatsback west out of Fire Island are catching them now, and some schoolies havealready been taken off the beach at Bridgehampton. I expect that any day nowone of the local sharpies will catch some here. Over the last couple of years, the boats haven’t started to catch any until around the end of May, but thereare more small fish around now than there have been over the last couple ofyears, so they may start up a little sooner than that. Fluke season starts May17 and they usually start biting right away.
As usual there are changes in the fluke regs, with a 19”minimum size limit, up an inch and a three fish bag limit, down from five. Itlooks like the seabass and porgie regs are the same as last year.
A couple of bright bulbs had the great idea to go for ascenic tour off the light in a small plastic boat with a small outboard motorthat couldn’t overcome the outgoing current. Luckily Capt Michael Potts on theBLUEFIN IV was coming home from a cod trip and towed them back inshore a bitwhere the Coast Guard picked them up.
