More than ten million years ago an earthquake deep beneath the surface split the far west coast of Mexico, separating the 1,000-mile long Baja California peninsula from the mainland. The Pacific Ocean rushed into the gap, creating the Sea of Cortez, a natural fish trap so rich in nutrients that today more than 800 marine species flourish.
Hemingway came here to fish; so did John Wayne, Bing Crosby and a clutch of other celebrity sportsmen from way back in the '40s. The marlin -- black, blue and striped -- run as big as 1,000 lbs., and as many as 40,000 marlin and Pacific sailfish have been caught in a year. Catch-and-release is the rule for marlin and all bill fish. There are abundant Tuna to be hunted, as well as Sailfish, wahoo, grouper, dorado, snapper, roosterfish and more.
Cabo San Lucas, at the southwestern tip of the Baja where sea of Cortez and the Pacific ocean kiss at a dramatic rock arch, Finisterra (?Lands End?), is a fisherman's dream destination, with a big Marina at its center and a host of lively restaurants and Bars such as Cabo Wabo among many others. Boats for charter range from state-of-the-art cruisers such as RedRum Sportfishing?s 32-foot RumRunnin to 20' skiffs known locally as "pangas." Experienced Captains know the prime spots, and will help a beginner to land the catch of a lifetime. Costs will run from $525 for a full-day on a cruiser to $180, plus bait, lunch and a tip for the day in a Panga: they all include fishing gear. As a nice change, fishing in Los Cabos isn't reserved for the rich...RedRum is setting the standard for "all inclusive" sport fishing in Cabo. It?s wise to make your reservations well in advance. Heather and Vince, the owners of RedRum, will personally assist you in experinceing the big game fishing trip of a lifetime. Redrum charters include all tackle, world class Penn and Shimano gear, a great lunch, all live bait (a big plus!), freezing or smoking of you catch and a dinner made with a portion of your catch at a local restaurant with all of the goodies. Hard to beat this deal and they catch fish! Check them out at RedRumCabo.com
Sport fishing put Los Cabos on the map; today, in this dramatically beautiful and dynamic resort destination, it's only the beginning of the vacation experience. Sailors navigate the waters and divers explore them; parasails soar across the skies and horses canter along endless beaches. Golfers tee off on five magnificent courses designed by experts like Nicklaus, Trent Jones and Dye, while right offshore, a party of migrating gray whales is not an unusual sight in the winter months. Hotels, in a range of price and pace, combine Mexico's matchless style with the warmth of the Baja people. Baja is as much of an attitude as it is a place. If you want to go and experience a slice of paradise and catch that fish of a lifetime there is no better place than Cabo and no better outfit than RedRum.
All bill fish should be released and it could not have been said better than how Hemminway said it here: You did not kill the fish only to keep alive and to sell for food, he thought. You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman. You loved him when he was alive and you loved him after. If you love him, it is not a sin to kill him. Or is it more?"
